Slowhand -- Oooh yeah!
Yesterday we met a group of friends at the Wine Network in Dempsey Road for some eats and drinks before EC's concert. Peggy arranged to have the "Clapton Cruiser" pick us up there and take us to the Singapore Indoor Stadium. It turned out that all of us had seats in the same section, and they were good ones too. I bought a t-shirt first thing. I didn't get one back in 1975 when Michael and I saw EC in Indianapolis. What was I thinking??
I had my camera with me, but the tickets said "Strictly no bottles, cameras or recording devices", so I wussed out (Singapore is into Rules, and I prefer to obey them, lest I suffer BIG consequences) and left it on the Cruiser with Jeffrey (the driver). We got in there and everyone had their phones at the ready to record and take pictures. What was I thinking -- again?? Michael took some pictures with his phone, but they didn't turn out well at all.
EC came onto the stage and immediately began playing "Tell The Truth"; he was brilliant as always, but I was also amazed by the band. All of them are huge talents, Doyle Bramhall II and Derek Trucks on guitar (Trucks reminiscent of Duane Allman IMO). I was blown away by their solos.
Tim Carmon and Chris Stainton were on keyboards, Steve Jordan on drums, Willie Weeks on bass, and Michelle John and Sharon White, vocals (they did the same arm-swaying throughout the entire show). EC didn't do a lot of talking; I think he said something to the effect of "It's been a long time since I've been here". Yes, it had been 17 years.
ANYWAY.... They performed non-stop for about an hour and a half. Finishing up with an electric "Layla", my all-time favorite song.-- mainly due to the fact that in 9th grade a 16-year old hunky lifeguard (who owned a 1968 convertible Camaro) kissed me BIG TIME! Whew! Will never, ever forget it!
So, on with my story -- "Layla".......OMG, WHEW and YES!!! I had to get up and dance. It was perfect. EC and the band came back for an encore with "Crossroads". We were hoping for a couple more songs, but that didn't happen.
I can't think of the right adjectives to describe the excitement and how I felt -- probably the closest would be EUPHORIA.
After the concert, all of us were still pumped up. John and Peggy invited everyone to their place. We had some drinks, and talked about the concert. Then somebody suggested we all walk down to Harry's. A great idea! Once there, I donned my EC t-shirt over my dress (you don't need to remind me that I'm quite strange)...Alex, Cristina, and I went downstairs to show it off to the band. Zul saw my t-shirt and said with a smile, "This one's for all of you who didn't go to the Eric Clapton concert. F*ck the rest of you who did!", then played a Clapton song. Zul is cool.

A Clapton concert. How awesome is that? I've never seen him. The only British guitar god I can think of that I've seen is Knopfler. Isn't it funny how as the decades pass we never tire of rock and roll? Wasn't there a time they thought we'd outgrow it? Now we're older than they were, and rockin' out more than they ever could.

I've never seen Knopfler, but he's amazing too. Rock and roll is just too much fun to outgrow!
It looks like everyone had a good time.
